Mission Statement

At Storm Hunter our mission is to help educate, guide, and bring awareness to those affected by natural disasters.

Vision Statement

At Storm Hunter we envision an environment where more people are informed about taking action in protecting themselves and others around them in order to prevent more casualties during a natural disaster. We want to help the community to be safe, be alerted, and be relocated away from the danger.

The Idea Behind Storm Hunter

Every year many people do not evacute or take shelter away from disasters causing many casualties that could be prevented. We wanted to take part in informing people about importance of being safe before, during, and after a disaster hits the area. Our team at Storm Hunter has worked on creating a great website which includes a crisis map to easily track disasters and find shelters. We also provide resources in which you can put forth the effort into donating to a local organizations as well as helping the community rebuild and recover.

We are the team at Storm Hunter. We are rising juniors and we participated in the Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program. We used our coding skills to help our community with something that we are passionate about. We all aspire to become software engineers in the future with the coding experiece we learned in Girls Who Code.

Types of Natural Disasters

Natural Disaster: A natural event such as a flood, earthquake, or hurricane that causes great damage or loss of life.

Floods

Floods are the overflowing of large amounts of water. Many floods develop slowly, however flash floods can develop in just a matter of few minutes without visible signs of rain. During a flash flood, it is important to evacuate, so you are not in the way of its destruction.

Hurricanes

Hurricanes are a storm with violent winds, in particular a tropical cyclone. They start as tropical storms over warm, damp ocean waters near the equator. They are also known as typhoons. Hurricanes don’t come alone they usually bring strong winds, heavy rains, and can cause flooding.

Tornadoes

Tornadoes are a mobile, destructive vortex of violently rotating winds, having the appearance of a funnel-shaped cloud. They are formed when warm, damp air and cool, dry air mix creating two air masses that could be unstable in the atmosphere. It's very important to take shelter, away from windows.

Blizzard

A blizzard is a severe snowstorm with high winds and low visibility. Temperatures are usually 10 °F or lower. It is important to have lots of resources like food, water, and road salt to before the storm starts in case you are trapped for weeks. Blizzards also cause freezing road and dangerous conditions for humans.

Earthquake

Earthquake is the shaking of the earth when sudden releases of energy creates seismic waves in the tectonic plates, which can result in the destruction of homes and buildings. In case of an earthquake it is important to get out of your home or building.

Tsunami

Tsunamis are high sea wave caused by a disturbance in the ocean, usually an earthquake. During a tsunami, get to high ground and do not wait to evacuate.Tsunami waves may travel as fast as jet planes over deep waters, only slowing down when reaching shallow waters.

Mudslides

Mudslides are when a mass of mud and other earthy material are falling down a hill. Mudslides tend to pull everything in its path. In the occasion of a mudslide you should get out of its way and stay alert.

Wildfires

Wildfires are a large destructive fire that spreads quickly over woodlands or forests. It usually starts when the forest is dry and lightning strikes or from the heat from the sun. Sometimes it is called by human carelessness. In case of a wildfire stay calm, call 911 and move away from fire.

Droughts

Droughts are a period of time with low rainfall and shortage of water. Droughts can last a few weeks to a few years, causing damage to ecosystems, agriculture, and the local economy. During a drought stay inside and use less water.

If your area is affected by a natural disaster, go to a storm shelter as fast as possible to ensure safety. Find a storm shelter near you in the United States. Sometimes storm shelters can take place in schools. Do additional research if you do not see any in your area according to the map.
